The County Department of Roads has stepped up efforts to improve road infrastructure in Turkana South and Aroo Sub-Counties through ongoing maintenance works and the completion of key road projects aimed at enhancing accessibility, security, and economic activities across the region.
One of the ongoing interventions is the routine maintenance of the 13-kilometre Lopur Angeles–Kalemungorok Junction Road.

The works include bush clearing to improve visibility and road safety, as well as grading to restore the road surface and enhance mobility for residents, traders, and other road users.
The maintenance activities are also creating short-term employment opportunities for local community members engaged in site clearance and related works.
In a major milestone for the county's road development agenda, the Department recently conducted a joint final inspection of the 70-kilometre Lorokon–Nakwamoru–Kapelibok–Lochorelim Road project.
The inspection team, comprising county engineers, contractors, security personnel, and community representatives, assessed the completed works to verify compliance with project specifications and quality standards.
The team reviewed key components of the project, including road formation, grading, and drainage structures, all of which are expected to significantly improve transportation and access across the region.
The improved road network is anticipated to facilitate movement between communities, strengthen security operations, and support emergency response efforts.
Speaking during the inspection, Deputy Director for Roads Julia commended the contractor for successfully delivering the project despite various operational challenges encountered during implementation.
She noted that the completion of the road marks a significant achievement in the county's efforts to enhance infrastructure and service delivery in remote areas.
Roads Monitoring and Evaluation Officer Benson Ekidor emphasised that the works were carried out in accordance with the approved Bill of Quantities and represented value for money.
He underscored the strategic importance of the road in supporting local economic activities, improving access to markets, and facilitating the movement of goods and services within the county.
Residents welcomed the improved road infrastructure, citing enhanced access to healthcare facilities, schools, markets, and other essential services.
Community members also noted that the upgraded roads have contributed to improved security and reduced travel times.
However, they appealed for additional drainage improvements and gravel works to ensure year-round accessibility, particularly during the rainy season.
The road projects form part of the county government's broader commitment to expanding and maintaining critical infrastructure to unlock economic opportunities and improve livelihoods.
Once fully operational, the upgraded roads are expected to boost connectivity, facilitate trade, ease transportation challenges, and contribute significantly to the socio-economic development of Turkana South, Aroo, and neighbouring communities.
