Moments of relief and celebration were witnessed in parts of Turkana County as drought-affected families received much-needed food support through a Kenya Red Cross Society initiative targeting vulnerable households.

In Loima Sub-County, a community member broke into celebration as food supplies arrived, an emotional reflection of the desperation many families have faced after prolonged dry spells that have disrupted livelihoods and food production.

Through the ongoing food drive, maize collected by the Kenya Red Cross has been milled into 428 bales of flour, now supporting 856 households across the area.

For many families, the distribution marks the first reliable access to food in weeks.

Residents say the assistance is not only helping to ease hunger but also restoring a sense of dignity and hope.

The food intervention is part of a broader, integrated humanitarian response by the Kenya Red Cross Society aimed at addressing the multiple challenges brought about by drought in the region.

Alongside food distribution, the organisation has rolled out medical outreach services, providing essential healthcare to communities with limited access to health facilities.

In addition, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) support is being implemented to curb the spread of waterborne diseases, which often surge during periods of scarcity.

Special attention has also been given to nutrition support for women and children, who remain the most vulnerable during food crises.

Health teams are working to identify and manage cases of malnutrition while offering education on proper feeding practices.

Humanitarian workers on the ground note that the integrated approach is critical in ensuring long-term resilience, as food insecurity in Turkana is often intertwined with health and water challenges.

While the rains remain uncertain, the Red Cross intervention is offering a lifeline to hundreds of families struggling to cope with the harsh realities of drought.
