The nearly completed Wajir Stadium is poised to become a transformative hub for sports, youth empowerment, talent development, and economic growth in Northern Kenya, marking a significant milestone in the region’s ongoing infrastructure and development journey.

Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, Salim Mvurya, announced that the 10,000-seater facility is now 90 per cent complete following an inspection tour and the official handover of the stadium to the National Celebrations Committee.

According to the Cabinet Secretary, the modern facility goes beyond its role as a sporting venue and represents a broader vision of inclusion, national cohesion, youth empowerment, and regional transformation.

“The stadium symbolises inclusion, national cohesion, talent development, and the economic transformation agenda championed by President William Ruto,” Mvurya said.

Located in Wajir County, the facility is expected to serve as a major catalyst for sports development by providing athletes and young people in Northern Kenya with access to modern infrastructure that has historically been concentrated in other parts of the country.

The stadium is anticipated to become a centre for nurturing sporting talent, hosting regional and national competitions, and creating opportunities for youth participation in sports and related industries.

Beyond athletics, the facility is expected to stimulate local economic activity through increased business opportunities, tourism, hospitality services, and investment.

Leaders believe the project will contribute to the emergence of Wajir as a key economic and sporting destination in the North Eastern region.

Following completion of the national celebrations, the contractor will return to undertake additional works that form part of an enhanced design aimed at creating a comprehensive youth development ecosystem around the stadium.

The expanded vision includes the establishment of facilities dedicated to sports talent development, film production, creative arts, and ICT innovation.

These components are intended to provide young people with opportunities beyond traditional sports by supporting skills development, entrepreneurship, digital innovation, and participation in the creative economy.

Government officials say the integrated approach reflects the growing recognition that sports infrastructure can serve as a platform for broader social and economic development.

The project aligns with national efforts to create spaces where young people can access opportunities for personal growth, employment, and innovation while contributing to community development.

Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi welcomed the progress made on the project, describing it as a demonstration of the confidence that the National Government has placed in Wajir County and the wider North Eastern region.

He noted that the development reflects a broader transformation taking place across the county through increased investments in infrastructure, education, security, and economic development.

The governor said county and national leaders remain committed to ensuring that the facility delivers long-term benefits to residents long after its initial completion.

The stadium project is expected to create employment opportunities during both the construction and operational phases, benefiting local businesses, suppliers, service providers, and youth groups.

Sports stakeholders have also welcomed the facility, noting that access to modern stadium infrastructure is critical for identifying and nurturing talent, attracting major sporting events, and encouraging greater participation in sports among young people.

As one of the largest and most modern sports facilities in Northern Kenya, the stadium is expected to play a significant role in redefining the region’s sports landscape while supporting wider efforts to promote social inclusion and economic empowerment.

Once fully completed, the Wajir Stadium complex will stand as a symbol of the region’s transformation and a strategic investment in the future of Northern Kenya’s youth, providing a platform for sports excellence, creative expression, innovation, and sustainable economic growth.
