Wajir High School is undergoing a major modernisation programme aimed at transforming the institution into a modern centre of learning capable of supporting the Competency-Based Education (CBE) curriculum while preserving and rehabilitating its historic infrastructure dating back to 1965.

The extensive upgrade, being implemented through a partnership involving the National Government, the County Government of Wajir, development partners, and the Wajir High School Alumni Association, is expected to significantly improve learning conditions, expand student capacity, and enhance access to modern educational facilities.

According to Principal Secretary for Internal Security and National Administration Dr Raymond Omollo, the modernisation project reflects a sustained investment in education infrastructure designed to equip learners with the facilities and resources required under the country's evolving education system.

The ongoing works include the construction of a four-square-kilometre perimeter wall to improve security and protect school property. Internal roads within the institution are also being upgraded by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), improving mobility and accessibility across the expansive school compound.

Additional developments include the construction of new dormitory facilities, installation of a borehole to strengthen water supply, deployment of solar power systems to enhance energy reliability, and the construction of two additional classrooms to accommodate growing student enrolment.

A major highlight of the modernisation programme is the development of a state-of-the-art ICT hub and library through a partnership between the National Government and the Safaricom Foundation.

Scheduled for commissioning in June, the facility will have the capacity to serve up to 1,000 students and is expected to become a key centre for digital learning, research, and innovation.

The facility includes a modern learning space, luggage area, boardroom, and library shelving infrastructure, with final works currently underway ahead of its official opening.

Education officials say the ICT hub will play a critical role in advancing digital literacy and supporting the implementation of Competency-Based Education by providing students with access to technology-enabled learning resources.

Further infrastructure improvements are also underway, including the construction of a twin laboratory for Chemistry and Biology to strengthen science education and practical learning. A social hall is also being developed using savings realised from the digital laboratory project.

The modernisation programme has also prioritised the rehabilitation of existing facilities, including the refurbishment of the school's main hall and podium, ensuring that historic structures remain functional while meeting contemporary educational standards.

Environmental sustainability has also been integrated into the project through the introduction of an eco-friendly steam jiko system aimed at improving energy efficiency and reducing operational costs.

Beyond physical infrastructure, the programme is placing significant emphasis on student welfare. All learners are benefiting from full capitation support and examination fee coverage, easing the financial burden on families and improving access to education.

In addition, two new school buses are expected to be launched in June to strengthen student transport services and facilitate participation in academic and extracurricular activities.

The Wajir High School Alumni Association has emerged as a key driver of the transformation agenda, coordinating support from alumni, local leaders, and members of the diaspora community.

The association has played a central role in mobilising resources and sustaining momentum behind the school's development projects.

The County Government of Wajir has also pledged additional support for the institution. Governor Ahmed Abdullahi has committed to drilling a second borehole to further enhance water access and support the school's expanding population.

Governor Abdullahi said the transformation taking place at Wajir High School reflects broader development gains being witnessed across the county through collaboration between the National and County Governments.

“The transformation and rapid development taking shape in Wajir is a result of the listening leadership of President William Ruto and our continued collaboration in advancing the needs and aspirations of our people,” he said.

He noted that Northern Kenya, which for many years lagged in national development, is now benefiting from increased investments in education, healthcare, roads, security, and economic opportunities.

The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is providing coordination support to ensure effective implementation, local oversight, and timely delivery of the modernisation programme.

Education stakeholders believe the ongoing upgrades will position Wajir High School as one of the leading learning institutions in Northern Kenya, capable of delivering quality education, promoting digital learning, and preparing students for future opportunities in an increasingly knowledge-driven economy.

Once completed, the modernisation project is expected to serve as a model for education infrastructure development in the region and demonstrate the transformative impact of coordinated investments in learning institutions.
