The government has intensified efforts to address recurring humanitarian challenges in Tana River County through a combination of long-term resettlement programmes and immediate emergency interventions aimed at protecting vulnerable communities from the impact of floods and drought.

Speaking during a relief distribution exercise in Galole Constituency, Geoffrey Ruku said the government is prioritising sustainable solutions to end the cycle of disasters that has affected the region for years.

“The people of Tana River have borne the brunt of perennial droughts and floods for a long time. The government has invested heavily in their relocation to higher grounds through the acquisition of land and subsequent resettlement,” he said.

The resettlement programme is part of a broader government strategy to move at-risk communities from flood-prone areas to safer locations, reducing vulnerability and enhancing long-term resilience.

At the same time, the government is rolling out immediate support to cushion affected families.

During the visit, emergency relief supplies were flagged off to assist households impacted by the ongoing heavy rains.

“As part of the government's intervention in Tana River County, today and through Special Programmes, we flagged off emergency relief supplies to support vulnerable families in Galole Constituency, especially during this time of heavy rains,” Ruku stated.

The intervention targets families most affected by flooding, providing essential supplies to help them cope with the current conditions while longer-term solutions are being implemented.

The Cabinet Secretary was accompanied by Said Buya, National Government Administration Officers, and local grassroots leaders, highlighting a coordinated approach between national and local leadership in responding to the crisis.

Officials noted that the dual approach, combining immediate relief with long-term resettlement, is designed not only to respond to emergencies but also to prevent future disasters from having devastating effects on communities.

Tana River County has for years faced cyclical flooding and drought, often displacing families, destroying livelihoods, and straining access to essential services.

The government’s renewed focus on relocation and resilience-building is expected to provide a more permanent solution to these recurring challenges.

As implementation continues, authorities have reiterated their commitment to safeguarding lives and livelihoods, ensuring that affected communities can rebuild in safer environments while receiving the support they need to recover and thrive.
