Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO) is set to construct a 220kV transmission line connecting Garissa to Habaswein/Dadaab and Wajir in a major move aimed at stabilizing power supply across North Eastern Kenya.

The announcement was made during a consultative meeting that brought together the Principal Secretary, State Department for Energy, Alex Kamau Wachira, KETRACO Acting Managing Director Kipkemoi Kibias, and leaders from Wajir County.

The meeting focused on government interventions to address persistent power supply challenges in the region and enhance electricity reliability.

The proposed 220kV Garissa–Habaswein/Dadaab–Wajir Transmission Line will be complemented by the construction of associated substations in Habaswein and Wajir.

The project is expected to significantly strengthen the transmission network and extend the national grid to previously unserved and underserved areas.

Speaking during the meeting, PS Wachira reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to ensuring equitable access to reliable electricity across all regions of the country, noting that a stable power supply is critical for economic growth, investment, and improved livelihoods.

KETRACO Ag. MD Kipkemoi Kibias emphasised that the project will enhance grid stability in North Eastern Kenya while unlocking opportunities for trade, industry, and social development.

He noted that expanding the transmission infrastructure is key to integrating remote areas into the national power system.

Once completed, the transmission line is expected to reduce power interruptions, improve voltage stability, and support regional development by enabling businesses, institutions, and households to access reliable electricity.

The Garissa–Wajir project forms part of broader government efforts to modernise and expand the national grid, ensuring inclusive development and energy security across Kenya.
