The Kenya Red Cross Society is ramping up efforts to strengthen community preparedness in Tana River County, where residents continue to grapple with recurring cycles of floods and drought driven by climate change.

In a region where extreme weather patterns have become the norm, the humanitarian agency is working closely with local communities to promote early warning systems and proactive response measures aimed at reducing the impact of disasters before they strike.

Through these interventions, more than 300,000 people have been reached with early warning information, enabling households to take timely action to safeguard lives and livelihoods.

The organization has also expanded its reach through TERA mobile messaging, ensuring that critical alerts are delivered quickly and efficiently to vulnerable communities.

Local residents, including beneficiaries such as Miriam and Mohamed, are increasingly relying on these early warnings to prepare for impending floods, demonstrating the growing impact of community-centered preparedness initiatives.

The Kenya Red Cross, with support from the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations and the Finnish Red Cross, has also invested in building local capacity.

At least 30 Community Disaster Risk Reduction members have been trained to support response efforts, strengthening grassroots resilience.

In addition, 600 households have received cash assistance to help them prepare for and recover from climate-related shocks, offering a lifeline to families facing repeated disruptions to their livelihoods.

By equipping communities with timely information, resources, and skills, the initiative aims to reduce vulnerability and protect dignity in the face of escalating climate risks.

As climate extremes intensify, the Kenya Red Cross reaffirmed its commitment to working alongside communities and partners to build resilience and ensure that those most at risk are better prepared for future shocks.
