The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) is intensifying efforts to strengthen regional cooperation as member states confront evolving peace and security challenges across the Horn of Africa.

Through its Peace and Security Division, IGAD continues to work closely with its member states to address emerging and transnational threats that affect stability in the region.

These include terrorism, organised crime, and human trafficking, which increasingly require coordinated responses beyond national borders.

A key component of these efforts is the IGAD Security Sector Programme, which supports stronger collaboration among national security institutions.

The programme focuses on enhancing cooperation, improving institutional capacity, and promoting coordinated responses to security challenges that impact multiple countries in the region.

According to the IGAD Secretariat, strengthening security sector institutions and improving regional coordination are essential steps toward building sustainable peace and stability.

The programme provides technical support, training, and platforms for dialogue among security actors from member states.

Through initiatives under the Peace and Security Division, IGAD also promotes security sector reform, encouraging member states to modernise and strengthen their institutions while aligning them with regional and international standards.

The organisation emphasises that addressing complex security threats requires a collaborative approach that combines national efforts with regional mechanisms.

According to the report, fostering dialogue and cooperation among governments and security agencies, IGAD aims to enhance the capacity of member states to prevent conflict and respond effectively to security risks.

Regional collaboration remains a cornerstone of IGAD’s peacebuilding efforts.

Through partnerships, capacity-building programmes, and policy coordination, the organisation continues to support initiatives designed to strengthen resilience and promote long-term stability across the Horn of Africa.

As security dynamics evolve, IGAD’s ongoing initiatives are expected to play an important role in reinforcing regional cooperation and building a safer and more peaceful environment for the people of the Horn of Africa.
