The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has reaffirmed its strategic partnership with Japan following the presentation of credentials by H.E. Okochi Akihiro, Japan’s Ambassador to the Republic of Djibouti and Ambassador accredited to IGAD.

The ceremony, held in Djibouti, underscored the long-standing cooperation between IGAD and Japan, particularly in advancing leadership, youth empowerment, gender equality, and broader socio-economic development across the region.

Speaking during the meeting, IGAD Executive Secretary Workneh Gebeyehu highlighted the importance of strong international partnerships in unlocking the region’s vast potential.

“The IGAD region, home to over 280 million people, 65 per cent of whom are youth, depends on strong partnerships to realise its potential,” he said.

He noted that Japan has been a consistent and reliable partner to the regional bloc, supporting key programmes that strengthen institutional leadership and promote inclusive development.

“Japan has been a longstanding supporter of IGAD’s leadership, youth, and gender programs,” Workneh added.

Reflecting on the occasion, the Executive Secretary said, “This morning in Djibouti, I received H.E. Okochi Akihiro, Japan’s Ambassador to Djibouti and accredited to IGAD, as he presented his credentials.”

He further expressed appreciation for Japan’s sustained engagement in the region, stating that “IGAD remains grateful for Japan’s continued commitment to economic and social development in the region.”

The reaffirmation of ties comes at a time when IGAD is intensifying efforts to address regional challenges while harnessing opportunities driven by a youthful population.

Both IGAD and Japan emphasised the value of collaboration in promoting stability, inclusive growth, and sustainable development across the Horn of Africa and neighbouring regions.
