The Government has stepped up efforts to strengthen livestock breeding and genetic improvement as part of a broader strategy to enhance productivity, climate resilience, and national food security.
Speaking after a consultative meeting with the management of the Kenya Animal Genetic Resources Centre (KAGRC) and sector partners, Jonathan Mueke, Principal Secretary in the State Department for Livestock Development, said the initiative aims to promote high-performing livestock breeds that are well suited to Kenya’s diverse ecological zones.
He noted that the government is focusing on strengthening breeding systems, improving quality assurance, and expanding capacity building to support farmers with reliable and climate-smart livestock services. According to Mueke, the interventions are designed to improve livestock productivity, enhance farmer incomes, and build resilience against climate-related shocks.

The programme is expected to benefit pastoralist communities in Kenya’s arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs), where livestock remains the main source of livelihoods and local economies. By promoting climate-resilient breeds and strengthening access to quality breeding and livestock services, the initiative aims to reduce livestock losses during drought, improve milk and meat productivity, and enhance resilience to climate variability.
