Vulnerable communities affected by recent floods are set to benefit from a targeted recovery initiative aimed at restoring livelihoods and strengthening resilience.

The programme, led by the Pastoralists Girls Initiative with support from UNDP Kenya, is part of the broader PREPARE Project focused on post-disaster recovery and sustainable development.

The initiative follows a comprehensive assessment conducted across affected areas to identify community groups most impacted by the floods.

The exercise sought to understand the priority needs, existing capacities, and potential opportunities for rebuilding sustainable livelihoods among vulnerable populations.

Findings from the assessment are now guiding targeted interventions designed to accelerate recovery while enhancing long-term resilience.

As part of the rollout, 20 community groups have been selected to receive direct support tailored to their specific needs.

Ten of the groups will benefit from livestock support through the provision of goats, an intervention aimed at reviving livestock-based livelihoods and boosting household income.

Livestock rearing remains a critical economic activity for many communities, particularly in pastoral and semi-arid regions, making this support a vital step toward economic recovery.

In addition, another ten community groups will receive business start-up kits to help rebuild small enterprises disrupted by the floods.

The support is expected to revitalise local economies, enable families to regain financial stability, and promote self-reliance among affected households.

Project implementers note that the dual approach, supporting both livestock and small businesses, has been carefully designed to address diverse livelihood needs within the communities.

By combining immediate recovery support with long-term economic opportunities, the initiative aims to create a more sustainable pathway out of vulnerability.

The programme also underscores the importance of partnerships in addressing complex humanitarian challenges.

Through its collaboration with UNDP, the Pastoralists Girls Initiative continues to play a key role in delivering community-centred solutions that respond directly to the realities on the ground.

Beyond immediate relief, the initiative is part of a broader effort to build resilience among disaster-affected populations.

By empowering communities with the tools and resources needed to recover, the programme seeks to ensure that households are better prepared to withstand future shocks.

Stakeholders involved in the project have expressed optimism that the intervention will not only restore livelihoods but also strengthen community cohesion and promote inclusive recovery.

As implementation begins, beneficiaries are expected to gradually rebuild their lives, with renewed hope for stronger, safer, and more resilient futures.
