The Frontier Counties Development Council (FCDC), with funding from the European Union and UNICEF Kenya, has launched a two-day blended learning training aimed at strengthening the integration of ICT in primary and junior schools in Wajir County.

The training brings together ICT Champions from Wajir East and Wajir West under the UNICEF LMCS Project, with a focus on supporting the Competency-Based Education (CBE) curriculum through practical digital teaching approaches.

Participants are being taken through hands-on blended learning methods designed to enhance learner engagement, creativity, and problem-solving skills. The sessions are being facilitated by community trainers from the Raspberry Pi Foundation, using Ministry of Education–authorised curriculum support content aligned to national education standards.

Speaking during the training, education and sector leaders reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring that learners in arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs) are equipped with future-ready digital skills. Among those present were Wajir County Director of Education Koriyow H. Ali, Hadado Sub-County Director of Education Abdi Daud Adan, and Deputy Director at the County Director of Education’s Office Saadia Abdikheir.

Also in attendance were Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Wajir County Secretary Noor Dahiye Bardad, alongside FCDC representative Abdullahi Hassan Maalim.

The initiative reflects a growing push to bridge the digital divide in ASAL regions by empowering teachers with skills and tools that support effective delivery of the competency-based curriculum. FCDC and its partners say the training is part of a broader effort to ensure equitable access to quality education and digital learning opportunities for learners in frontier counties.

The programme has been welcomed as a timely intervention that positions Wajir schools to better leverage technology in classrooms, while preparing learners for a digitally driven future.
