The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) Kenya Programme has officially launched a transformative initiative aimed at integrating peacebuilding and social cohesion into refugee management in Garissa County.
The three-month project, funded by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), seeks to foster inclusive, resilient, and peaceful communities in refugee-hosting areas.
Led by DRC Kenya Country Director Simon Nzioka, the initiative represents a significant step toward bridging humanitarian, development, and peacebuilding efforts.
By collaborating with the Garissa County Government, UNDP, and local actors, the project will address the root causes of conflict and displacement while promoting community-led dialogue, mediation, and reconciliation.
Key components of the initiative include strengthening local peace structures, enhancing accountable governance, and leveraging digital tools for trust-building.
The project also prioritizes empowering refugees, host communities, and institutions to co-create sustainable, locally driven solutions.
During the launch, Garissa County leaders commended the initiative as a critical effort in ensuring no one is left behind.
The DRC reaffirmed its commitment to advancing inclusive and sustainable peace, reframing the narrative around refugee management in Kenya.
