The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has appointed former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete as the African Union (AU) High Representative for the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea, in a move aimed at strengthening peace, security, and regional cooperation.

The appointment comes at a time when the Horn of Africa and Red Sea corridor continues to face complex security challenges, including ongoing conflicts, political instability, and strategic competition over vital maritime routes.

By naming Kikwete to the role, the AU is signaling a renewed commitment to diplomatic engagement and conflict resolution in one of Africa’s most geopolitically sensitive regions.

Kikwete, who served as President of Tanzania from 2005 to 2015, brings decades of leadership and diplomatic experience to the position.

He has previously played key roles in regional peace initiatives and is widely regarded as a seasoned mediator with deep knowledge of African political dynamics.

In his new capacity, Kikwete will be tasked with supporting AU-led efforts to promote dialogue among member states, enhance coordination with regional bodies, and advance sustainable peace and stability across the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea basin.

His mandate is also expected to include engagement with international partners to address cross-border security threats and safeguard critical trade routes.

The Horn of Africa remains a strategic priority for the African Union due to its proximity to global shipping lanes and its significance in regional and international security.

The Red Sea, in particular, is a vital corridor for global commerce, making stability in the region essential not only for Africa but for the wider international community.

Observers note that Kikwete’s appointment could help reinvigorate diplomatic efforts and provide a unifying figure capable of navigating the region’s complex political landscape.

His leadership is expected to complement ongoing AU initiatives aimed at fostering peace, security, and economic integration.

The African Union has reiterated its commitment to working closely with member states and partners to address the root causes of conflict and build lasting stability in the Horn of Africa and beyond.
