West Pokot County Governor Simon Kachapin has officially launched the Ondoa Nyasi Initiative, a transformative housing program aimed at replacing grass-thatched homes with iron sheet roofing for vulnerable families across the county.

The landmark event, to be held at Kacheliba Mixed Primary School, marks the beginning of a county-wide rollout that will benefit households in all 20 wards.

In a social media announcement ahead of the launch, Governor Kachapin described the initiative as "an impactful step towards decent, dignified housing" and a fulfilment of his campaign manifesto pledge.

"This is transformative leadership focused on real change and improved living standards for our people," he stated, urging residents to attend the historic event.

The Ondoa Nyasi (get rid of thatched grass houses) program addresses critical challenges faced by residents living in traditional thatched houses, which are prone to fires, pests, and weather damage.

By providing durable iron sheets, the county government aims to elevate living conditions while stimulating local economies through job creation in the roofing and construction sectors.

Ahead of the launch, Governor Kachapin engaged with residents through a live radio session on Kalya Kokwo and North Rift radios from 7:30 AM, detailing the implementation plan and gathering community feedback.

The interactive forum allowed citizens to understand how the iron sheet distribution will be prioritised to reach the most vulnerable households first.

The launch will begin with the first batch of iron sheets distributed to selected beneficiaries, with county officials demonstrating proper installation techniques.

Kachapin explained that the program incorporates training components to ensure proper roof maintenance and will be implemented in phases across all sub-counties.

"This initiative goes beyond roofing materials; it's about restoring dignity and protecting our people from preventable housing-related disasters," said Governor Kachapin.

The Ondoa Nyasi Initiative aligns with Kenya's Affordable Housing agenda and sets a precedent for grassroots-driven solutions to housing challenges in arid and semi-arid regions.

Residents can follow subsequent distribution schedules through their local ward offices and community radio announcements.
