Isiolo County has taken a step toward community-led land governance with the successful election of the Community Land Management Committee (CLMC) for the Kina-Kulamawe-Gotu Dedha Community.
The historic assembly, held at Kina Social Hall, was facilitated by the Isiolo CSO Network–Land Sector Forum, comprising the Drylands Learning & Capacity Building Initiative (DLCI), Ardha Jabesa Foundation, Pastoralist Women for Health and Education (PWHE), and ISID.
Presided over by Isiolo County Community Land Registrar Mr. J.G. Wanjohi, the process adhered to Section 7(2) of the Community Land Act, Cap 287.
According to an update on DLCI’s official social media platforms, the event drew representatives from all seven locations within the community land, alongside senior government officials from both the county and national levels.
Attendees included Isiolo County Executive Committee Member Hon. Yussuf Dahir, Chief Officer for Lands Francis Lekasime, Ministry of Lands representative Andrew Khaemba, Kina Deputy County Commissioner, and Borana Council of Elders Chair Hon. M.K. Hallo, as well as NGO partners, elders, and community members.
The formation of the CLMC marks a crucial advancement in strengthening local governance, securing collective land rights, and fostering sustainable land management in Isiolo’s drylands.
By empowering communities to take charge of their land resources, the initiative aims to enhance resilience, equity, and long-term development in the region.
